Monday, October 3, 2011 - 7 pm

The Perpich Center for Arts Education welcomes Minnesota book award winning author for 2011, Mary Lethert Wingerd, who will be talking about her most recent book North Country: The Making of Minnesota which is published by University of Minnesota Press. A reception sponsored by the Perpich Center for Arts Education Foundation will follow the presentation by Ms. Wingerd. In this comprehensive text readers learn how the land the Dakota named Mini Sota Makoce became the State of Minnesota. The narrative is enhanced by more than 170 illustrations and informative captions. Wingerd is associate professor of history at St. Cloud State University and is the author of Claiming the City: Politics, Faith, and the Power of Place in St. Paul.

This program is free and open to the public and is supported by the Minnesota Book Awards through grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in conjunction with State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education, and the Minnesota Library Foundation.

The Perpich Center for Arts Education is located at 6125 Olson Memorial Hwy., Golden Valley, MN 55422. The event will be in the Performance Hall. Signs will be posted. Parking is free.

Open House from 10 am - 4 pm at the Golden Valley Library
Program at 1 pm

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Golden Valley Library building and the 125th anniversary of the City of Golden Valley, the Golden Valley Library is hosting an open house with refreshments. Arts High School students in media and visual arts will have their work on display throughout the month of October for Teen Read Month. These students will be honored at this Open House as well as students who worked with local Minneapolis artist, Peyton Russell, to create a commemorative mural for the Golden Valley library. This mural will be unveiled at the Open House. Please come and help celebrate this event and the artistic talents of Arts High School students!
